What’s all that NOIZE? (Q & A With Urban Noize)

By | Fri Jun 22, 2012 | 2:14pm ET

We all know that production plays a tremendous role when it comes to liking a song. The beat choice is what sets up the mood and even though lyricism is very important, it’s the beat that usually sticks (at least it does for me). A year ago when I first started Womazing, I was introduced to this production group that go by the name of Urban Noize, based out in South Florida. What instantly caught my attention about these guys is that they are twin brothers that share the same talent and share the same ambitions. Just knowing those things alone, I felt that I needed to know more about these talented guys from Urban Noize. After hearing a few tracks produced by them and the remixes they have done for songs, I became a fan. And I gradually became intrigued by their Noize and decided to contact them for an interview. Even though, Steve was unavailable, I was able to chat with Steven about a few things. Here’s how it went…

Kas: For the people that don’t know who Urban Noize is, can you please let them know who guys are, and what you do?
Urban Noize: Urban Noize is a music production group that consists of my twin brother. It was started a few years ago after we decided to get serious with music.

Kas: I love how you both are working together. What’s your twin brother’s name?
Urban Noize: Steve, & I am Steven. Which is pretty much the same name Lol.

Kas: Now, what inspired you guys to start working on production? And what triggered you guys to work together to come up with Urban Noize? Because I think it’s rather interesting how you both are twin brothers and are talented in the same area.
Urban Noize: Well what inspired to get into music was just our love for it first of all. & As our interest grew, sometimes we would imagine ourselves playing in bands with certain artist, like Alicia Keys. & What triggered us to work together would be the fact that we’re both interested in figuring out how to use FL Studios, the software we produce on.

Kas: Ah, I love me some Alicia Keys.
Urban Noize: Yup Alicia was one influence lol. Along with a few others that I can’t remember from that time.

Kas: Is there something you do in the production aspect that’s different from Steve?
Urban Noize: Yea actually & I would say it has to do with sampling, even though we both do it. He focuses more on creating stuff from scratch, because of his desire to want to know the piano. But it doesn’t stop there, because I’ll generally work on the drum track at times.

Kas: Cool! I know you’ve worked with D-League out from Ft. Lauderdale. Are there any up and coming artists you’ve worked with? And any that you’re producing beats for as of right now?
Urban Noize: Well besides D-League, there’s an artist by the name of Jay Burna that we’ve been working with for awhile. He’s based in Broward. & We have done quite a lot material with him. An album titled Chosen One.
Kas: Jay Burna? hmm…I think I’ve heard of him. I have to do my research.

Kas: Are there any artists you would like to work with? Anyone that’s on the come up? Or even on a higher status?
Urban Noize: At the moment, not anyone in particular. But were always down to work with new artists if we’re interested in what they’re doing. Perfect example would be a dude by the name of J-Hype who’s extremely talented.

Kas: Are you guys picky with who you both work with, or are you up to working with anyone that might reach out for production?
Urban Noize: Hmm, I wouldn’t say we’re picky, but I will say is generally when working with someone; we gotta feel what they’re doing, whether its rap, r&b, etc. Their music has to appeal to us on some level.

Kas: I hear ya. I always live by that motto too. I wouldn’t want to put my name on something that I’m not genuinely feeling. -Let’s talk about the remixes you guys have done! I’ve enjoyed all the ones I’ve heard so far. It’s pretty cool how you guys do that. You’re probably the only ones I see that constantly releases remixes to songs and that are really dope. What made you guys start doing those? I’ve always thought of you guys as The Remixers lol…
Urban Noize: There’s actually a few reasons why we got into remixing. & One of them would be the fact that we enjoy experimenting with our sound. Remixing allows us to think outside the box & stretch our minds & come up with creative & unique ideas. As well as the fact that it is just fun. & we completely enjoy it.

Kas: That’s incredible. I thoroughly enjoy them. Have you guys done beat tapes?
Urban Noize: Thank you, thank you. & Nope we’ve never done beat tapes before. May have to be something to look into.

Kas: Beat tapes are dope. But I think what you both are doing with the remixes and even the audio biography that you guys did on Rihanna, makes you stand out more! It’s creative and different…and you don’t really see many producers try and think outside the box.
Urban Noize: Again, thank you. & That’s generally what we’re always trying to go for, something different. Not necessarily for those listening at first, but ourselves, because we do like to challenge ourselves.

Kas: Is there anything you both enjoy to do besides working on music?
Urban Noize: Besides music, we definitely enjoying going out to movies. Been movie fans for a long time now, like everything from action to comedy, & drama.

I want to say a huge thank you to Steven, for taking the time to do this interview with me!
