When it comes to fashion, people don’t even shop at the mall anymore. Independent clothing brands have definitely sky-rocked in the past couple of years. We here at Womazing.com recently came across a dope brand by the name of Local Tourist, who have proved that they are not planning to give up anytime soon. The brand has been on the come up, and recently got some attention from Mibbs from Pac Div, as he wore their LOCAL snap back in the latest video for “Savages“, which recently dropped yesterday. We here at Womazing wanted to learn more about Local Tourist, so we made sure to link up with them and find out who was the genius behind the brand, what it meant, and what else do they have in store. Read the full interview below.
Q: When did you first get into fashion, and what made you start your own clothing line?
A: Started my company in the last year of college at the University of Oklahoma.
When I was15ish I found out Ecko Unltd. Owned by one man, I had been wearing Ecko, it reflected the 5 elements of hip hop and when I realized it was one man’s vision I decided then, that’s what I wanted to do. I did all the legal things, and got a small loan and I’ve been learning the business ever since.
Q:How did you come up with the brand Local Tourist? What is the meaning behind the name?
A: Honestly I took a vacation to LA when I was in college, I was writing a lot of words and slang in my sketchbook. The words Local and Tourist fell next to each other, it’d describe my life, what I was feeling at the moment and I believe its relatable to a lot of people young and old. We go through live being a tourist and become localized to what we love and how we run our personal lives.
Q: With there being so many clothing brands out right now, what makes your brand
different than the rest? I believe I’ve been able to capitalize on trends, from a collab with BBi we were at least a year ahead of the snapback hats with words across them. I also create limited runs of cut/sew female tees. Streetwear sometimes forgets bout the ladies.
Q: Does music inspire any your designs? If so, how? and if not, then what does
inspire your designs?
A: I can’t say music inspires the designs necessarily but is definitely apart of the
movement and process. Music and Fashion go together like peanut butter and
jelly. What would a artist wear and who would wear a designer’s fashion. Iron
sharpens iron. (Please see attached do for mixtape info)
Q: What goals do you want to achieve with Local Tourist? And what keeps you motivated to accomplish them?
A: Some goals would be to be in department stores, to be carried nation wide and international. To be recognized on a national level. Motivation—never settling and understanding that you’re once step closer to your gold mine. To do your own business is a constant struggle, It takes real dedication through all the trials of life and I wouldn’t give it up for anything else, being a entrepreneur is a rare breed.
Q: If we fast forward to one year from now, where do you yourself and brand? And
where do you want Local Tourist to be in 5 years from now?
A: Year from now, carried in select boutiques in key metropolitian cities, allingment
with A list artist and internet sales that sell out immediately. 5 years from now
one step closer to cashing that big Macy’s check.
